How to choose an oracle deck for your spiritual practice
Here at Soul Shala we love the use of Oracle cards to help us connect to our highest self and spirit. They are a beautiful tool for asking for advice, messages and signs. So naturally you may be feeling the call towards having your own deck so you connect to the universe whenever you need it most. So here is my advice on choosing your deck.
What are Oracle cards?
Before choosing your deck its important to understand what oracle cards are and how they differ to the ancient art of tarot (which they often get confused with). All tarot cards adhere to a specific structure consisting of 78 cards divided into major and minor arcana, each with its own symbolism and traditional interpretations rooted in centuries-old occult practices and require a more experienced practitioner for readings.
Meanwhile oracle cards encompass a broader range of designs, themes, and meanings, often created by individual artists or authors. They have no rules allowing for greater creativity and personalization in their design and interpretation. Oracle cards offer a more fluid and intuitive approach to readings, drawing from the imagery and messages selected by the deck's creator. This makes them the perfect beginners tool for connecting with guidance.
How to choose your deck?
Oracle cards work by connecting to your energy and reflecting it back to you with the guidance you need. As a result, it’s really important you connect to your deck. With so much variety in the world of oracle, there is always a deck for everyone. Here are some things to consider when choosing yours.
Imagery: choose a deck with imagery that inspires your intuition and speaks to your soul. Look at the colours and scenes depicted in the cards- do they speak to you?
Author: Oracle decks are channelled guidance from the author so it’s important to consider that the deck they design will be created in their energy. It can be helpful to do some research on the author and see if they are someone you connect with.
Theme: Oracle decks often follow themes. They may call on a specific element to share guidance through. For example, ocean oracles, rose oracle, goddess oracle, herbal astrology oracles and so much more. Consider what elements connect to and want to seek guidance from.
Important guidance on connecting to your deck
The most important part of your oracle reading journey is taking time to connect and build a relationship with your deck. If you want deep and accurate readings it’s really important you take the time to build this relationship. Here’s a step by step guide:
Cleanse your deck as soon as you get it (smoke cleanse with incense or place selenite on your deck)
Sleep with your deck under your pillow or on your bedside table. It is said the veil is thinner whilst sleeping. So you and your deck can get to know each other on a subconscious level first. Do this for at least a week.
Simple one card pulls everyday to begin with so you can get to know each other. If a card doesn’t resonate at this stage, ask the oracle to try again.
Read the guide book- this is like a ‘get to know me’ for your new deck. Allow it to introduce itself
Pay close attention to if your deck comes with recommended spreads or an attunement in the guide book. Do these first.
Once you’ve done these you will be deeply connected with your deck and begins to rely on it for more deep readings. It will surly become one of your closest friends and a beautiful tool in your spiritual practice.
